I think of myself primarily as a knitter. I can look at a knitting pattern and figure it out pretty quickly. I have confidence that 90% of the knitting patterns that interest me are projects I can accomplish with little or no help. But out of 17 handknit/handcrochet projects in LotusMonkey Boho Fall Fashion, 9 are completely crochet or are trimmed with crochet.
I have favorites. I seem to LOVE doing what I call the "loopy stitch" in crochet -- particularly when I LOVE a yarn and don't have a lot of it. It creates a faux fur, and what could be better than a pet-friendly fur?
For this Mermaid Mesh Stole, I only had one skein of Berocco Hip-Hop available. I would've been happy with Koigu single crocheted along the edges of the stole, but looking at the model, the complete outfit, and what it needed, I realized that the Cassoulet colorway of the Berocco yarn would tie things together better than a delicate, ladylike stole. In this instance, I chose the sass of "loopy stitch" over the miniature points of color offered by Koigu accents.
There were A LOT of scarves/stoles in my show. Why? one may wonder indeed. Actually, it's a matter of taste. I think that professional runway models tend to look great in the clothing they model 70% of the time (yes, I have bones to pick with top designers ;-) but non professional models who eat full meals and may not want to scrimp on sour cream, napping instead of jogging, or have priorities other than maintaining a perfect Size 2 have other clothing priorities. I love layering for warmth, for flow of fabrics against my body, and yes, because a scarf will lengthen my body when worn to unite the upper and lower halves of my body with something fun, frivolous perhaps, but also warm.
Although Selena is slender, she was wearing a dark top and a lighter color valued bottom (her floral skirt). To help unite the upper and lower halves of her body, I added my favorite (of all time) Granny Square Scarf. This is a matter of taste. There are other ways to do it.
The tallest model was 5'4". I've always been under 5'2". After a while, you get these ideas of how to elongate your figure and to give the illusion of height. Scarves are one way I choose to do that and crocheting them is fun.
Also, there are some yarns that honestly are only good for crafts, but they have ended up in my stash through various gifting sources and I love to do the MOST that I can do with ANY yarn. And therefore, crochet. Crochet is MUCH more forgiving on recalcitrant, wormy yarns (yarns that squiggle and twist while you're knitting them until the form little "worm-like" shapes) than knitting -- EXCEPT in the case of boucle yarns. (Eck -- boucle garments are WONDERFUL but a nightmare to knit or crochet.) So I discover that I'm quite the hooker with my little crochet hook. Not at advanced or genius, just steady and happy to be working with fibers!
